When I was in excruciating pain from herniated cervical discs, the neurosurgeon I consulted — who I was expecting to tell me that nothing but surgery would help — actually recommended heat, along with massage and physical therapy. (I didn’t need to find a hot rock to lie on, as an electric heating pad achieves the same effect.) I was able to avoid hideously expensive and risky surgery, not to mention weeks in a neck brace, so that was a relief. Maybe those Chinese ladies are on to something. 🙂
