Schaapscheerderskou

Sheep shearing cold is the name in the Low Countries for a cool period that occurs with some regularity in the month of June. This can especially occur between June 5 and June 20. In this period it is often cloudy and relatively cold and night frost can even occur.

The name comes from the time when sheep were sheared in this period. Sheep shearers used to take advantage of the gray and cool weather to shear their sheep. The cool cloudy weather was pleasant for humans and animals: it was strenuous work and the bare sheep were not exposed to the bright sun. Because of the often large amounts of precipitation and the northwest wind, it is also referred to as the northwest monsoon.

Mafia boss Matteo Denaro’s henchmen ‘used sheep code’

Bah. Turns out it’s code about sheep, not baaing. 😉

A mafia boss on the run since 1993 communicated with fellow criminals using a code based around sheep, Italian police say.

Officers arrested 11 men they say are linked to the fugitive head of the Sicilian Mafia, Matteo Messina Denaro.

They said Mr Denaro communicated with his henchmen using scraps of paper left at a farm in western Sicily.

Phone messages used to alert the men to new bits of paper or “pizzini” often referred to sheep, police say.

Officers do not believe that the alleged criminals were really discussing agricultural matters.

“The sheep need shearing,” “The shears need sharpening” and “The hay is ready” were among the messages passed between mafiosi, police say.

Another said: “I’ve put the ricotta cheese aside for you, will you come by later?”

Massive Flock Of Sheep Blocks Traffic As Far As The Eye Can See

Wow.

Think your traffic is bad? Watch and see what happens when you have to wade through a whole flock of sheep!

This scene is like something out of a dream, or perhaps a case of counting sheep gone wrong: thousands of sheep overrun the road in Vina del Mar, Chile. Alejandro Blas Glucevic snagged some footage of the strange occurrence, slowly driving through and parting the sea of sheep.

There isn’t much information available on the Internet regarding how this massive amount of sheep came to be in the middle of the road, but they served as a roadblock for miles. No matter the rhyme or reason behind their presence here, one thing is certain: somewhere out there, in the biggest flock your eyes ever did see, is a farmer, wondering how in the world he’ll ever herd his sheep back home.
